Hamis Kiggundu, the Redeveloper of the Nakivubo Stadium
In 2015, Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni tasked Hamis Kiggundu with the ambitious project of redeveloping and upgrading the Nakivubo Stadium into a modern sports facility. This was met with both significant excitement from the sports community and deep scepticism from the public. After all, the stadium had not been touched since the 1960s, and it was showing its age. Kiggundu was up to the challenge, however. After months of hard work and dedication, the stadium is now home to one of the most modern sports complexes in Uganda.
Kiggundu began his project by planning out the overall design of the complex. He wanted to make sure that the stadium was accessible to not only athletes and fans, but also to individuals and community groups who wanted to make use of the space. He also wanted to ensure that the stadium was able to handle the needs of multiple sports, so he decided to lay several courts and tracks on the main field. All in all, Kiggundu ended up putting in twice as much effort as he initially anticipated, but the results were worth it.
Kiggundu began construction on the Nakivubo Stadium with a team of local workers and the help of a few international firms. Together, they worked tirelessly to restore the stadium to its former glory. Throughout the course of the project, Kiggundu managed to add a new athletics track, basketball court, and seven artificial turf pitches. He also added several new stands and a modern scoreboard.
Kiggundu was not done yet, however. He established a youth training centre on-site to provide young people with a place to honour and improve their athletic talents. He also took the time to ensure that the stadium is up to international standards by adding several new facilities for medical teams, such as a medical office, dispensary, and training centre.
Kiggundu’s hard work is certainly paying off. On its grand opening, the Nakivubo Stadium was filled with the shouts of excited fans. It is now host to several sporting events, including the local league.
Hamis Kiggundu the Philanthropy
In April 2020, Uganda’s COVID-19 task force was the recipient of an incredible donation from Hamis Kiggundu, who provided food relief supplies to help the nation fight the pandemic. Kiggundu, who is a Ugandan businessman and philanthropist, showed a deep commitment to helping and supporting others in Uganda. The donations made were not simply limited to the task force, as Kiggundu expanded his support to over 100 Ugandan journalists through the Uganda Journalists Association.
Kiggundu’s generosity did not go without criticism, however, as the Ugandan journalists were also given cash handouts for the relief packages. While his decision to provide cash donations was controversial, Kiggundu’s intent was to provide a lifeline to those journalists who had been struggling during the pandemic.
Kiggundu further underlined his commitment to helping the Ugandan people in July 2021, when he donated USh 530 million to the Government of Uganda to help in the purchase of COVID-19 vaccine doses. In addition to calling on other wealthy Ugandans and corporate entities to join him in saving lives, Kiggundu also emphasised the importance of giving back to the Ugandan community during these difficult times.
Kiggundu’s donations have made a huge difference in helping to protect and aid Uganda citizens both during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond, and for that he deserves immense praise. His determination to save lives in such a compassionate and generous manner is really something to be admired.
